Borrowing from the library

Borrowing limits

You can have a maximum of 15 physical items and 5 eBook or eAudio items on loan at one time.

Loan Periods

Videos, DVDs and lending magazines can be borrowed for 1 week. Most other physical items can be borrowed for 3 weeks.  For eBook and eAudios, you can choose you own lending period for titles within the limits, 7, 14 or 21 days.

Fines

Fines are imposed on physical items that are overdue, damaged or lost.

There are no fines for eBooks or eAudio.  Books are automatically returned after the due date.

Fines apply to overdue items borrowed with an adult library card and may prevent you from borrowing other items until the charges are paid. There are no charges for overdue loans on junior library cards, except for a fee on long overdue items. Please see library overdue item fines for more details.

If a borrowed physical item is lost or damaged, you will need to pay the cost of purchasing and processing a replacement. Please see library replacement items fees for more details.

Requesting items

You can request physical items from any LINC Tasmania Library branch. You can then collect these items from your local LINC or library. This free service is available through our catalogue, TalisPlus, or by asking a staff member. Please see Placing holds for further information. You will be notified when requested items arrive. Please see holds notification for more information.

You can place a hold on up to 5 eBook or eAudio titles at any one time.  You will be notified by email when your request arrives.

Renewing items

You can renew your physical items for a maximum of two additional loan periods. Go to the My Library feature of our catalogue, or ask or phone our staff. Please see What is My Library? for more information.

Interlibrary loans

If we do not hold a copy of a book, report, article or other publication you are seeking, we may be able to obtain a copy for you from an interstate or overseas library. Please see Document delivery and interlibrary loans for more information.

Suggesting a purchase

If you believe there is an item that should be part of our collections, you can suggest that we purchase it.

We can only purchase eBook and eAudio titles if they are available through our supplier, OverDrive.

Keeping track of your loans

Library Elf is a service available on-line that can help manage your physical library loans and holds. It keeps track of what is due, overdue and ready for pickup by sending you alerts by email and/or RSS feed. There are free basic options or premium subscription options available.

Library Elf is a private service, not affiliated with LINC Tasmania. Use of this service does not excuse participants from library fines if materials are returned late. Cardholders use Library Elf at their own risk as users must submit personal information, including library card numbers and PINs, to an independent company not associated with LINC Tasmania. Please read Library Elf's privacy policy and FAQ before deciding to sign up for the service.

Library Elf offers 2 levels of service: Basic (free) for 1 card holder; or Premium (subscription) for 1 or multiple cards and more extensive features. For more information about Library Elf.

Note on RSS feeds

If you receive your RSS feeds through a web-based aggregator such as Bloglines, Feedster, and Yahoo, your feeds might be viewable by the general public even if your account is marked 'Private'. This is due to the nature of web-based RSS feeds, and is not due to a security failure by LINC Tasmania or Library Elf.
