The Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office collects records of individuals and families who have lived in Tasmania or contributed to Tasmanian life. We do this because letters, diaries, photos and other records give unique information about the heritage of Tasmania.
The personal and family records we collect are those that have long-term value to the community. This includes letters, reminiscences, diaries, scrapbooks, photo albums, professional papers, speeches, lectures, business records, genealogical information, films, videos and audiotapes. We also collect records of an individual’s civic, business, religious, political and social activities. Our private records collection policy has more details on what we collect and why.
Once records are deposited in the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office they are described and listed on our website so everyone can see what we hold. However if you are concerned about confidentiality or privacy these records can be restricted for a time. You can discuss this with staff when you are depositing your records.
The Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office is a secure repository which is protected against fire and unauthorised acess. The storage areas are air-conditioned and have appropriate temperature and humidity controls. Our conservators can restore documents in need of repair and in some cases records are digitised if they are likely to be heavily used or fragile.
