Literacy support services

LINC Tasmania helps Tasmanians develop the literacy skills they need to meet the demands of everyday life – in their families, communities and workplaces.

A literacy coordinator network operates from urban and regional communities across Tasmania including Bridgewater, Deloraine, Devonport, George Town, Glenorchy, Hobart, Huon, Kingston, Launceston, Rosny, St Helens, Scottsdale, Smithton, Sorell and Queenstown.

Trained volunteer tutors provide one to one support for clients within local communities.

Literacy skills development programs support Tasmanians to take those important first steps to new skills. Programs focus on building participants’ reading, writing, numeracy, oral communication and learning skills in particular contexts – for example, numeracy skills for work on farms or reading skills needed to obtain a driver’s licence.

LINC Tasmania also has an early literacy strategy which includes:

  • Rock and rhyme: an interactive session for young babies aged 0–24 months with their parents or carers
  • Storytime sessions of sharing stories for pre schoolers around the state
  • Baby book packs designed to introduce parents to books suitable for 3 different age groups
  • Bookstart delivered by LINC Tasmania in cooperation with child health centres and child and family centres. Bookstart provides parents with a reading information pack at their newborn’s 4-week health check.
