What others found at their LINC

Huon LINC

null "Being a stay at home mum for 10 years, I felt out of touch with job skills and adult interaction.
The first course I attended at the Huon LINC was Introduction to Community Services.
This helped me gain valuable communication skills and the ability to learn. Six months later I completed a Certificate III in Business Administration. So many opportunities have grown from these courses both personally and professionally."

Burnie LINC

null Linda and Cheralyn met at the LINC's Be Ready for Work program and have since built a wonderful friendship.  Both felt they had low confidence, no computer skills and were looking for something to help them gain skills to head back in the workforce. "At the LINC it has been really friendly and no-one has told you that you can't do it" Linda says. Linda and Cheralyn have now both completed the eLearn program to learn the basics of computing. "It is a very relaxed environment and we have wonderful tutors who have helped us every step of the way.  We are now moving on to the Certificate II in Information Technology" says Cheralyn. Cheralyn is planning a career as a teacher's aide and Linda is planning to enrol in the Certificate III in Community Services.

Become a tutor

nullAnne Rothwell was an English teacher in a country high school many years ago.  Since then, she has had quite a few jobs, but always thought she would like to teach again one day.  As part of her plan to do that she works as a volunteer tutor with LINC Tasmania. As a literacy volunteer, Anne has been prepared to do further training to improve her teaching skills. This has greatly benefited her ESL (English as a second language students).  Anne considers herself lucky to have found a role where she can do something she enjoys and help others in her community.

A great role model

null Daniel is a great role model to other young people with learning difficulties.  His message is don't give up, accept you have difficulties, ask for help and seize the opportunities to get those basic skills needed for life. Dan attended high school until Grade 10 and then continued at the Huon LINC for years 11 and 12.  Since joining Polytechnic classes at the LINC he has become a reader, can use a computer and obtained his First Aid certificate and learner's licence.  Dan is now a confident young man with strong enduring friendships. What does the future hold for Dan?  His gardening business is blooming largely due to his reliable, courteous manner and general trustworthiness. Dan may require further training down the track and he is looking forward to it!

Burnie LINC

null"I was invited to participate in a new Mentoring program with local youths through the LINC which was very rewarding. I also enrolled in the Adult Literacy Tutoring program through the LINC and Polytechnic and discovered that teaching literacy is a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience. To improve my computer skills I enrolled in e-learning at the Wynyard Online Access Centre. This gave me the confidence to be able to volunteer at the centre and assist other computer users. They are all very small steps taken one at a time that have led me to now being a student in the University Preparation Program at the Cradle Coast Campus this year. I am preparing to enter university next year as a mature aged student with new goals, I see myself working in the field of education in the future. My first step was to Burnie LINC."

Literacy in action

nullThis is Kingston LINC’s successful ‘Everyday English and Maths for ESL’ class in action. This program is being held in response to a request for literacy assistance for members of the Sudanese community in Kingborough. The program is designed to offer an intensive spoken and written English class, with a view to developing skills to assist with further employment and training. The group has expanded its horizons, and now includes participants from Korea, Bangladesh and the Philippines. It is delivered by an experienced facilitator with trained literacy tutors on hand to provide additional one-to-one support. This program is increasing the level of confidence, skills and social networks of those attending, and they are very much enjoying the experience as the photograph shows. For more information on this program or the literacy program in general please contact Allyson at Kingston LINC.
