VOLUNTEER STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Adult and Family Literacy Tutor

The role

To provide voluntary adult and family literacy learning support, appropriate to the learning needs of individuals and groups, as identified by the Regional Adult and Family Literacy Coordinator or other Supervisor. 

Duties

  1. Provide learning support for individuals and or groups of learners using strategies determined and overseen by the Regional Adult Literacy Coordinator or other Supervisor.
  2. Prepare learning activities appropriate to the literacy levels and needs of the learners.
  3. Meet regularly with the learner/s in a mutually convenient, suitable location, preferably a Community Knowledge Network public facility.
  4. Report on progress of learner’/s’ on a regular basis using reporting documentation provided.
  5. Encourage independent learning and facilitate access to Community Knowledge Network facilities and services.
  6. Support the use of Lexia literacy software where appropriate.
  7. Refer learner/s to Supervisor when the need arises

Direction/ Supervision 

Receives direction from the Regional Adult and Family Literacy Coordinator, Online Access Centre Coordinator, Adult Education Officer or Librarian.

Essential requirements

  • A satisfactory good character check is required before becoming Adult and Family Literacy Volunteer.
  • Satisfactory completion of a recognised Adult Literacy Volunteer Tutor Training Course.
  • Be punctual in arriving for any rostered shifts, and if unable to make the commitment, contact the responsible library staff member, preferably 24 hours before the allocated shift.
  • Computer literacy skills or a willingness to acquire computer literacy skills

Desirable requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older, speak English well, and have the ability to read and write English at year 12 level. No previous teaching experience necessary.
  • Have good communication, listening and organisational skills.
  • Ability to be sensitive, patient, understanding and respectful of learner's situation, needs and goals.
  • Willingness to be creative, flexible and enthusiastic.
