If your convict has a unique name, go straight to the 'convict details' screen, which lists all records for that person.
2. Select your convict
If you have found more than one convict with the same name, select by
- the name of ship, or
- the date of arrival.
Click on the linked database number next to the convict name to go to their 'convict details' screen.
The index searches for all words. If you search for 'Smith' it will also find names such as 'Arrowsmith' and 'Smithers'.
3. Note ship name and arrival date.
From the 'Convict Details' screen make a note of:
- the ship
- the date of arrival.
Records for convicts arriving together are normally together.
4. Select a record
Select your first record by clicking on the link. This takes you to the 'item details' screen, which describes how the volume is arranged.
Note: Records are only ordered by the first letter of the surname.
5. View online
Once you understand the layout of the record, click on 'view this record online'.
6. Browse
Use the arrow key to move through the pages of the volume. Some volumes have several names on each page. The conduct registers can have detailed entries for three convicts on each page. Use the scroll bar to move up and down the page. When you find your record, click on 'enlarge' to read it.
If the text is too small, increase the number under the 'zoom' button to 125 and then click on 'zoom'.
