Notes

  • If a person rented a place to live or lived with their employer, the only records about them may be census records, post office directories, electoral rolls and assessment rolls.
  • Tracing where ex-convicts lived can sometimes be difficult. Often they left the state, or changed their name.
  • You can sometimes find information about where someone lived when searching other records, such as birth, death or marriage registration, wills and so forth.
  • Digitised indexes can also be useful.  See particularly the Wayn and Whitfield indexes.
