The naturalist, Jacques Julien Houtou Labillardière, was a member of the D'Entrecasteaux expedition which spent seven weeks exploring and mapping the area surrounding Recherche Bay in 1792 and 1793.
Labillardière collected thousands of plant specimens and published a remarkable account of his observations and interactions with the local area and its people. Based on this historical record, Nicola Dickson visited south eastern Tasmania in 2016 to re-trace the steps of the naturalist.
The artist captures a sense of place informed by her present experiences and by imagining past events.
Open from 16 February to 30 June 2018 in the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts, Ground Floor, 91 Murray Street, Hobart.
Nicola Dickson was supported by ArtsACT project funding.
