Borrowing from the library

Members can borrow items from a statewide collection that includes a great range of fiction and non-fiction books, magazines, DVDs and CDs. 

Join

Membership gives you access to all our resources, including physical and digital collections. You can join online or in person at your local library

Visitors to Tasmania can apply in person for a 3 month membership.  This entitles them to borrow books, magazines, DVDs and CDs.

My Account 

Here you can review your account and update your contact details. 

Membership is renewed every 2 years. We have 3 simple ways to update your email address and contact details:

  • My Account: change your contact details in the personal information tab 
  • Phone us: contact any of our locations
  • Visit us: pop into your nearest library

You can check where you are in the queue for your hold and when your items need to be returned or renewed. 

Locate and discover 

Browse your local library for items that are ready to borrow. Search the catalogue, create wish lists and place holds on items that are located around the state or are on loan. 

You can have up to 15 holds on physical items. We will let you know when your hold is ready to borrow from your local library. You have 10 days to collect your hold. Manage your holds in My Account.

Access our eLibrary for a big range of online books, comics, music, film and magazines. Search the catalogue or browse eLibrary

Checkout

Self-issue terminals will be available in many libraries and library staff are always ready to help. 

You can:
  • borrow up to 15 items 
  • download up to 5 eBooks or eAudio*
  • download and keep as many eMagazines as you like*
  • download and keep up to 5 Freegal eMusic songs per week*
  • stream Beamafilms*

*Tasmanian residents only

In general the loan periods are:

Renew 

If we have your email address we will remind you to renew or return your loans. Loans can be renewed twice if they haven’t been requested by another member. You can ask for a renewal at your local library, or you can renew your loans in My Account.

Returns

Loans can be returned to any of our sites. Some libraries have after-hours returns chutes.
