​​​​​Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office (TAHO)/ Tasmanian Information and Research Service (TIRS) volunteer

Objectives

T​o contribute to, and support the range of, programs and services provided by the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office and Tasmanian Information and Research Services

Role and responsibilities

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Indexing 
  • Basic preservation activities 
  • Sorting ephemera 
  • Assisting family historians
  • Assisting in the Allport Library and Museum of Fine Arts 
  • Transcription of manuscripts 
  • Providing assistance to clients with ​data entry, computer questions, issues and tasks

Who you report to

TAHO and TIRS staff direct and supervise volunteers in accordance with the LINC Tasmania Volunteer Management Guidelines. Volunteers engaged in Department of Education approved activities, are covered by the Tasmanian Risk Management Fund.

Requirements

  • Be 18 years of age or older 
  • Volunteers are expected to have:
    • Good communication, organisational and listening skills 
    • The ability to be sensitive, patient, understanding and respectful of clients’ needs 
    • A willingness to be flexible and enthusiastic
  • Registered to Work with Vulnerable People
  • Be punctual, but if unable to make the commitment, contact the Coordinator, preferably 24 hours before the allocated time 
  • Record your volunteer hours in the volunteer book at the end of each attendance 
  • Basic computer literacy 
  • Ability to read 19th century handwriting
  • Interest in and/or knowledge of the following areas: Tasmanian history, art, ceramics, film, or ephemera 
  • A completed Volunteer Commitment form
